The ICU that I work in was recently awarded a Fall 2009 Beacon Award (see below for a description of what that means). We are very excited about this award and have been doing quite a bit of celebrating! I copied the article below from our local paper. The picture comes from our hospital's website.
A University Hospital intensive care unit won a prestigious award that ranks it among the most effective in the nation.
The hospital’s Medical and Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit recently received a Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence. The award is given by the Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, based on seven measures of success, including patient outcomes, training, mentoring and overall healing environment.
There are an estimated 6,000 intensive care units in the United States. The AACN has given about 200 Beacon Awards since the award’s inception in 2003.
It “puts University Hospital in select company,” said Stevan Whitt, medical director of the Medical and Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit. “The award shines a light on the experience and skill with which we take care of critically ill patients 24/7, 365 days a year.”
The Medical and Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit has 18 beds dedicated to the care of acutely ill patients. The unit is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of more than 100 people.

Congratulations! I am sure that feels great to be recognized for the hard work you do every day. I can't imagine all you see and deal with in an ICU unit. I am sure you frequently come home exhausted both physically and emotionally. So.... well done! This deserves a celebration. Go eat a huge amount of M&M's for me. :)
I can believe it!! I had great care while I was there in the Neuro-ICU after my Brain Surgery! Congrats on a job well done!
